The
most important rule of the road is to make sure you keep your money,
ATM and credit cards, passport, and airline tickets on you at all
times -- not in your backpack or luggage. There are
several different types of money pouches available for travelers.
One of the most popular is the "fanny pack" pouch that you
wear in front. You can also buy neck pouches, waist, leg, and even
bra pouches that are worn under your clothing, and money belts.
Choose one that is comfortable and practical for where you are
traveling. You can buy money pouches at travel, outdoor and luggage
stores.
And it's not just pouches -- you can find some really creative ways
to hide your money. There are key chains, belts, cases, even a
portable closet safe disguised as a padded coat hanger! You can get
all of these items for under $40.
I find the "fanny packs" are the most comfortable and
convenient, but at times you may want a pouch that can be concealed.
If you're sleeping on a train couchette or staying in a hotel that
is not very secure you will want a pouch that can be concealed under
your clothing or put under your pillow. Magellans
has a number of different day bags, purses and totes, as does eBags.
Another good tip is to make two sets of copies of your passport,
credit cards, ATM card, plane tickets and a list of your traveler's
check serial numbers. Leave one copy at home with someone you can
reach in an emergency. Keep the other set with you in a safe place
separate from the originals. Check out our tips on ATM
safety.
